  Although this position requires only 20 to 24 hours per week, it can be combined with other positions with other (and sometimes similar) responsibilities to accommodate someone who prefers closer to a full time 40 hour week during the summer.   The accounting assistant position is part-time [20-24 hours per week during season] and seasonal, beginning in April and going through the end of September, at the least; with the possibility of a few weeks in October or November. The schedule is flexible from April until season begins and then again during post-season. During season, there will be a set schedule.  The primary rationale for this position is to support the Bookstore Assistant Manager/Accounts Payable Manager to manage the financial paperwork flow that stems from preparing for the Chautauqua summer season business.   A probationary period will be observed.

    The Bookstore is at the heart of the Institution, located in the historic Post Office Building on picturesque Bestor Plaza, and is consistently a hive of activity throughout the Chautauqua season.  The Bookstore carries merchandise that is tailored to the needs of Chatauquans whether they visit the Institution for a day or stay for the entire season.   We carry a wide array of books about Chautauqua history and community, books authored by Chautauqua speakers and CLSC presenters, books for Special Studies classes, current New York Times Best Sellers and a solid collection of general interest titles.  We also are the number one place to shop for Chautauqua-imprinted clothing and gifts.  There is also a great assortment of tasteful gifts, educational and fun children's toys, puzzles and games, greeting cards, and sundries.  We carry a wide variety of art supplies for adults and kids alike.    Customer Service Associates in the Bookstore will help patrons find and purchase merchandise that is appropriate to their needs and that will make their visit to Chautauqua more memorable.  Our associates will be reliable, knowledgable, courteous, and attentive in their interactions with customers and co-workers.  One of the payoffs of working at Chautauqua is the chance to meet a number of interesting people who come to visit from all over the world, and practically everyone of them comes to the Bookstore at some point.

  Title Bookstore Receiving and Shipping Assistant
    The Chautauqua Bookstore is looking to fill the long term seasonal position of Assistant to the Shipping and Receiving Manager.  The person in this position will help the shipping and receiving manager process all of the inventory that will be sold in the Bookstore.   Ideally, but not necessarily,  the position will be filled by someone who is interested in working at the Institution over a number of years and whose availability dovetails nicely with the scheduling requirements.  The position asks someone to work a part time schedule - about 25 hours a week in March and April, a full time schedule is required from May through August and 15 to 20 hours a week in September and October.   The position involves a combination of physical, clerical, data entry and problem solving work and requires quite a bit of training which is provided by the manager.  Once trained, this employee will work quite a bit under his or her own direction.  The typical schedule may include some Saturday shifts and can be flexible enough to accommodate employee desires to work particular days or hours during the off season.
