The pre-eminent expression of lifelong learning in the United States, Chautauqua Institution comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. Over the course of nine weeks, more than 100,000 people visit Chautauqua and participate in programs, classes and community events for all ages — all within the beautiful setting of a historic lakeside village. As a community, we celebrate, encourage and study the arts and treat them as integral to all of learning, and we convene the critical conversations of the day to advance understanding through civil dialogue.
Children's School at Chautauqua Institution is a developmental preschool for youth ages 3 to 5.
The program includes a wide range of social, recreational and educational activities. Weekly themes often incorporate other Chautauqua programs in the areas of music, drama and art. Each classroom is staffed with: one certified head teacher; one assistant teacher; one college-age assistant; and one high school-age assistant. The teachers work as a team and share classroom responsibilities to create an enriching, positive atmosphere.
The Drama Specialist for Children's School will work with classroom teachers to provide activities designed to be developmentally appropriate for the students within each level. On a weekly basis, the Drama Specialist meets with each age group to introduce them to different elements of theater, opera and movement.
The Drama Specialist will also coordinate with organizations and groups within Chautauqua Institution to provide an interdisciplinary drama program, including aspects of literature, art, music, and auditory and visual activities.
