    The pre-eminent expression of lifelong learning in the United States, Chautauqua Institution comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. Over the course of nine weeks, more than 100,000 people visit Chautauqua and participate in programs, classes and community events for all ages — all within the beautiful setting of a historic lakeside village. As a community, we celebrate, encourage and study the arts and treat them as integral to all of learning, and we convene the critical conversations of the day to advance understanding through civil dialogue.


    The Development Office at Chautauqua Institution has an opening for a full-time, paid summer internship. The intern is responsible for various tasks in support of donor and guest relations, communication and marketing initiatives, data management and provides administrative support to several members of department staff. 

    The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm with some shifts on alternating Saturday mornings, and at other times as needed for occasional overtime. Preference will be made to candidates who are available from June 17 through August 23, with start and end dates being flexible.


    Intern Responsibilities include:

    • Donor and Guest Relations
    • Assist with Development Office reception, greeting visitors and directing phone calls
    • Prepare welcome packets for guests and assemble materials for volunteer events
    • Assemble gift baskets for new members of the Bestor Society
    • Hand-deliver invitations and other correspondence on the Institution grounds as necessary
    • Distribute Symphony Patrons tickets


    • Communication and Marketing
    • Assist with marketing volunteer fundraising initiatives
    • Manage inclusion of endowment recognition articles in the Chautauquan Daily newspaper
    • Assist with mailing endowment stewardship reports


    • Data Management
    • Assist with event RSVP management and data entry for a variety donor events
    • Track sponsorships in ArtsVision database
    • Assist with general administrative support and provide flexible assistance by pivoting to other projects as needed.


    • Candidate should have outstanding customer service skills and be able to multi-task.
    • Computer, office, telephone, interpersonal, organizational and grammar skills necessary.
    • Must have good working knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel and a valid driver’s license.
    • Candidates should have completed at least 2 years of college.
