    The pre-eminent expression of lifelong learning in the United States, Chautauqua Institution comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. Over the course of nine weeks, more than 100,000 people visit Chautauqua and participate in programs, classes and community events for all ages — all within the beautiful setting of a historic lakeside village. As a community, we celebrate, encourage and study the arts and treat them as integral to all of learning, and we convene the critical conversations of the day to advance understanding through civil dialogue.


    Assistants will film live events in multiple venues throughout the season and, do post production work and produce DVDs for sale. The Multimedia Recording Assistant is a part-time (approximately 35-40 hours a week) position including some required evening and weekend hours depending on events and scheduling. The general overview is the capture, editing and production of sales material for distribution of the lecture content of the main lecture platforms. Employment runs from June 17-August 25, 2019, assistants may start or leave the season early depending on their academic schedule, upon prior arrangement and approval. Post August 25 work is possible. 


    The following is a sampling of the tasks that may be required in a typical day:

    • Transportation of equipment to recording venue
    • Setup of audio equipment and computer
    • Mixing of multiple sources; live to stereo
    • Assisting with livestream feed for FaceBook Live
    • Patching of audio signals
    • Setup and use of a Professional HD Video Recorder (you will be trained if needed)
    • Editing of stereo file for master CD creation
    • Duplication of CDs/DVDs for sale
    • Uploading and posting of online content


    The following skills are necessary for completing the required tasks:

    • Knowledge of basic recording techniques
    • Ability to mix live to two
    • Competence with Sequoia/Samplitude DAW
    • Deductive reasoning and a sense of logical order
    • Ability to organize alpha/numerically
    • Comfort and skill with computers in general
