  • Overview

    The Database Specialist will provide a broad range of database services to support all areas of fundraising through the maintenance of the Raiser’s Edge system by ensuring data is accurate, current, and organized.  This incumbent will report to the Director of Development Operations as an integral member of the fundraising team and complement the work of all fundraisers. 

    Responsibilities

    • Maintain an expert working knowledge of fundraising software and relationship management solution (Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge).
    • Ensure constituent and gift record integrity by conducting data audits, running maintenance queries and performing corrections as needed.
    • Contributes to developing a comprehensive suite of database audit reports, helping to determine area, priority and frequency of data auditing projects.
    • Conduct an annual review of the entire audit report suite with Director of Development Operations and other key staff.
    • Segment and deliver all necessary data for direct mail campaigns and electronic solicitations.
    • Manage large imports and exports for 90+ events each year, ensuring proper use of RE event module (invitations, participant information, name tags, and event details).
    • Run basic and advanced queries, lists and reports to support fundraising efforts.
    • Distribute bi-weekly and monthly fundraising reports.
    • Respond to ad-hoc reports as requested by fundraising staff, working closely with requestors to ensure accuracy and minimize revisions.
    • Provide support to donor database users as needed. Assist fundraisers in using aspects of the system required to support the fundraising efforts of the organization.
    • Maintain current knowledge of fundraising and advancement services trends and best practices, seeking out opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance, including building networks with colleagues at peer institutions.
    • Possess personal integrity and the ability to appropriately handle confidential and sensitive information.

    Qualifications

    Formal Education Requirements

    • Associate’s Degree in Computer Information Systems/Computer Science or closely related field. Candidates with equivalent combination of education/work experience will also be considered.

    Formal Experience Requirements

    • Minimum 3-years prior experience in database management within a fundraising environment. 
    • Strong preference given to candidates with experience in Blackbaud's Raiser’s Edge or other fundraising software.

    Skills and Abilities

    • Working knowledge of data relationships and prior experience with relational databases and/or reporting systems.
    • Ability to identify complex problems and use critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and relevant information to evaluate options and develop solutions.  Aptitude to anticipate, recognize, trouble shoot and resolve technical problems.
    • Use of deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning and information ordering to apply rules, combine pieces of information to form conclusions and arrange actions in order according to rules/patterns.
    • Active learning and listening skills to understand implication of new information for current/future problem solving and decision making as well asking questions as appropriate. 
    • Selective attention to concentrate on a task without being distracted.
    • Exceptional attention to detail coupled with ability to make quick decisions, take initiative and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast paced, high demand environment. 
    • Perceptual speed to quickly and accurately compare similarities/differences among sets of letters, numbers, objects, pictures or patterns.
    • Proficiency in various computer applications, including Microsoft Suite, SharePoint/One Drive and Fundraising/Client Management Software (e.g. Raiser’s Edge)
    • Excellent interpersonal and professional communication skills (written/verbal) to interact with internal management and staff at all levels, as well as patrons and donors.

    Working Conditions and Environmental Hazards

    • Normal levels of office noise from conversation, computers and systems. Risk of eye strain due to heavy computer usage.  Employee should seek to change visual focus every twenty minutes to alleviate potential discomfort.

    Physical Requirements

    • Primarily sedentary work with approximately 95% of work performed sitting at a desk and using substantial/repetitive motion of fingers, wrists and hands (including grasping).    
    • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
    • Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing and walking when organizing office, filing paperwork and managing daily administrative tasks using resources at floor/desk/overhead levels.
    • Visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.

    Hours of Work

    • The work schedule requires an average commitment of 37.5-hours/week with flexibility to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required and willingness to flex up in scheduled work hours (based on business need) – particularly during summer seasonal operations.
