  • Overview

The pre-eminent expression of lifelong learning in the United States, Chautauqua Institution comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. Over the course of nine weeks, more than 100,000 people visit Chautauqua and participate in programs, classes and community events for all ages — all within the beautiful setting of a historic lakeside village. As a community, we celebrate, encourage and study the arts and treat them as integral to all of learning, and we convene the critical conversations of the day to advance understanding through civil dialogue.

    Responsibilities

Chautauqua Institution maintains multiple public beaches on the shoreline of Chautauqua Lake. The beaches operate seven days a week throughout the nine week summer season (JUNE - AUGUST). General operating hours are either from 11am to 6pm or 12 to 5pm.

    • Beach lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of the swimmers while in the water by educating patrons on and enforcing waterfront rules, many of which are mandated by the New York State bathing codes.
    • The lifeguard will enforce rules in the immediate beach areas occupied by sunbathers, walkers, and the general Chautauqua audience.
    • Maintaining a clean and tidy area, including the removal of seaweed, debris, and the occasional dead fish from the swim area lines and beach front.
    • Pre and Post Season work may be available.

    Qualifications

    • Current Waterfront Lifeguarding Certification required as well as valid First Aid, CPR, and AED.
    • Interviews will begin Spring 2019.
