  • Overview

The pre-eminent expression of lifelong learning in the United States, Chautauqua Institution comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. Over the course of nine weeks, more than 100,000 people visit Chautauqua and participate in programs, classes and community events for all ages — all within the beautiful setting of a historic lakeside village. As a community, we celebrate, encourage and study the arts and treat them as integral to all of learning, and we convene the critical conversations of the day to advance understanding through civil dialogue.

    Responsibilities

The John R. Turney Sailing Center provides a home base for the programs and services of Chautauqua's Sailing Department. The Center includes a classroom and administration building, docks and a storage facility. During the nine-week summer season (JUNE 22–AUGUST 25), a comprehensive curriculum of one-week sailing courses are offered that have been carefully designed to advance the sailing skills of all -- youth to adult and novice to advanced sailors. In addition to our structured courses, the Sailing Department provides sailing experiences to Boys' & Girls' Club participants, offers guided sailing excursions for families and small groups, and provides staff for individualized private lessons. A variety of sailboats are also available for rent. Our fleet of boats include: Optimist Dinghy, Vanguard 420, Sunfish, Laser, Lightning, Flying Scot, and Precision 185 as well as five safety motor boats. The sailing center operates for the entire nine-week summer season with daily opportunities to sail.

The sailing office attendant will act as an administrative assistant to the sailing director. The position will require office type work such as answering the phone, scheduling lessons and rentals, operating point of sale cash register and using Microsoft office programs, as well as light housekeeping duties. 9 week (June 22 - August 25), 9am-4pm, Mon-Fri commitment.
