    The pre-eminent expression of lifelong learning in the United States, Chautauqua Institution comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. Over the course of nine weeks, more than 100,000 people visit Chautauqua and participate in programs, classes and community events for all ages — all within the beautiful setting of a historic lakeside village. As a community, we celebrate, encourage and study the arts and treat them as integral to all of learning, and we convene the critical conversations of the day to advance understanding through civil dialogue.

    Responsibilities

    The Bookstore is at the heart of the Institution, located in the historic Post Office Building on picturesque Bestor Plaza, and is consistently a hive of activity throughout the Chautauqua season.  The Bookstore carries merchandise that is tailored to the needs of Chatauquans whether they visit the Institution for a day or stay for the entire season.   We carry a wide array of books about Chautauqua history and community, books authored by Chautauqua speakers and CLSC presenters, books for Special Studies classes, current New York Times Best Sellers and a solid collection of general interest titles.  We also are the number one place to shop for Chautauqua-imprinted clothing and gifts.  There is also a great assortment of tasteful gifts, educational and fun children's toys, puzzles and games, greeting cards, and sundries.  We carry a wide variety of art supplies for adults and kids alike. 

     

    Guest Service and Retail Clerks in the Bookstore will help patrons find and purchase merchandise that is appropriate to their needs and that will make their visit to Chautauqua more memorable.  Our associates will be reliable, knowledgeable, courteous, and attentive in their interactions with guests and co-workers.  One of the payoffs of working at Chautauqua is the chance to meet a number of interesting people who come to visit from all over the world, and practically every one of them comes to the Bookstore at some point.

     

    Essential duties and responsibilities: 

    • Being reliable and prompt regarding posted schedule
    • Greeting guests upon their entering the Bookstore
    • Helping guests who may need assistance in finding merchandise - books, gifts, clothing, etc.
    • Stocking shelves and displays
    • Handling money and operating a computerized cash register
    • Basic store maintenance - cleaning (dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, restroom cleaning, trash removal)

    Qualifications

    • Demonstrated reliability with availability to work a minimum of 22-hours/week 
    • Availability to be scheduled at least 1-week prior to start of Chautauqua Season (June 15) if no previous work experience at Bookstore
    • Availability to be scheduled at least 3-weeks prior to start of season if no prior work job experience at all
    • Availability tobe scheduled through Mid-August
    • Please, employees should not make more than (2) requests off from work during season (two individual days)
    • Average or above academic ability - especially in math
    • Interest in Guest Service and/or hospitality – good social skills
    • Ability to handle a sometimes very fast-paced working environment
    • Ability to stay focused and on task despite repeated interruption
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule and some weekend hours
