  • Overview

    The Manager of Group Sales and Programs is responsible for attracting group business to Chautauqua Institution, coordinating their accommodations and meals, planning programs and generally orchestrating their Chautauqua Experience both during the nine-week summer season and outside of that timeframe.  The Manager stewards relationships with existing group tour organizations and agencies while also cultivating new relationships to bring guests to Chautauqua from our target markets. 

    The Manager is part of the Marketing & Communications division and collaborates with colleagues across the Institution, including and most significantly with the Athenaeum Hotel and its conferencing services, to achieve a world-class service experience for all guests.  The Manager also works with organizations in the region to coordinate off-grounds experiences.

    Responsibilities

    1. Achieve group sales goals through management and stewardship of existing relationships and cultivation of new business
    2. Manage group sales budget and develop projections and plans to support institutional planning and management
    3. Track and manage contracts associated with group sales and ensure accurate and efficient record keeping
    4. Curate group experiences in collaboration with colleagues on and off the grounds of Chautauqua Institution, including hotel, meals, transportation and other arrangements associated with group sales
    5. Track guest satisfaction and deliver an excellent guest service experience aligned with Chautauqua’s Chain of Excellence service strategy
    6. Engage effectively, in alignment with Chautauqua’s service strategy and disposition, with colleagues at Chautauqua Institution to achieve goals
    7. Support the development of guest engagement and business development outside of the traditional nine-week summer season, collaborating with Conference Services, Strategic Initiatives and other operational areas
    8. Coordinate and oversee on-grounds tours of Chautauqua Institution
    9. Represent Chautauqua Institution at regional and national tourism conferences and programs designed to develop new contacts and lines of group business

    Qualifications

    Formal Education Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in communication, business or related field preferred. Professional experience aligned with the position roles and responsibilities will be considered in lieu of a degree.

     

    Formal Experience Requirements

    Experience in program development and management, sales, customer service or entrepreneurial roles preferred.  Experience with Microsoft Office products required, with general fluency with information systems, social media and digital platforms preferred.

    Work Requirements

    Evening and weekend work often required, with extended hours particularly during the nine-week summer season at Chautauqua and when hosting groups otherwise.  Ability to travel for purposes aligned with the position also required.
